・Ponkan is a delicious citrus fruit with a deep sweetness and refreshing aroma. It is said to have originated in India and was introduced to Kagoshima in 1896 via China and Taiwan.
It is said that the "pon" in Ponkan orange comes from Poona in western India, which is a combination of the character for the citrus fruit "kan."
- Although there are differences between varieties, they all have a characteristic shape with a protruding stem part, called the stalk, and a concave bottom part, called the apex.
- By storing it for a while after harvesting, the moisture in the skin is removed, so the skin feels rough to the touch and it has one of the least sour tastes of all citrus fruits.
・Ponkan is in season from mid-January to mid-February. Most are harvested in November or December, and are stored until they are ripe to eat, giving the fruit elasticity and adjusting the flavor before being shipped.
・The outer skin of Ponkan is very soft, so you can easily peel it off with your hands and eat it with the inner skin. It is easy for children to eat, but it has seeds, so you need to be careful when eating it.
・The basic way to store Ponkan is to store it at room temperature. However, if you leave it in a cardboard box, it will dry out and the inside will quickly become dry, so be careful.
The recommended method of storage is to put it in a plastic bag and seal it. Ponkan is a fruit that loses moisture easily, so be sure to store it properly as soon as you buy it. Ponkan will last about 2 to 4 weeks after purchase when stored at room temperature.
