Marihime is an original variety of Wakayama Prefecture that is a cross between "Akihime" and "Sachinoka." When you take a bite of this large berry, the rich sweetness, rounded acidity, mellow aroma, and juicy juice spread in your mouth.
"Marihime" was named with the hope that it would become a cute variety that would be loved by everyone, like Kishu Temari, a folk craft from Wakayama Prefecture.
The Wakayama Prefecture Strawberry Producers Association (243 members as of 2023) has been granted permission to use "Marihime," and 203 households are cultivating it in greenhouses covering 20.5 hectares. "Marihime" seedlings are planted in mid-to-late September, and are shipped from early December to early May of the following year.
In recent years, elevated cultivation, which is easy to work with, has become more common, and is now used in approximately 40% of greenhouses.
A good quality cucumber is one that is shiny and firm, with a fresh, green stem. Marihime is a relatively large variety, so it is best to choose one that is as plump and large as possible.
